PM defends school sports funding plans
Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged to 'look carefully' at the future of school sport funding.
Cameron told Prime Minister's Questions today (1 December) that there is a "shared interest" in developing competitive sport in schools. In October's Comprehensive Spending Review, the government withdrew funding for School Sport Partnerships (SSPs), a decision that has been criticised by elite athletes and headteachers.
However, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister denied reports hinting at a government rethink on scrapping SSPs and that more details would be revealed in due course. Cameron said: "The culture and education secretaries are working hard on this. We're talking with headteachers so we make sure what we can come up with actually works on the ground."
It follows a parliamentary debate on 30 November, in which former culture secretary Andy Burnham told MPs: "There is a formidable force lining up against the government and the chorus of disapproval grows by the day." However, education secretary Michael Gove argued that cash allocated to SSPs had not been spent "as effectively and efficiently as it should have been".
A Youth Sport Trust spokesperson said: "We were delighted to see a debate in the House of Commons yesterday on school sport and the strong cross-party support for school sport partnerships. "We continue to be inspired by the passionate and committed people who work within school sport partnerships, creating opportunities for every youngster to take part in school sport."
Earlier this week, 75 Olympic and Paralympic athletes wrote to the Prime Minister urging him not to "destroy any hopes" of a legacy from the 2012 Games.
