Ireland officially lodges bid for Rugby World Cup 2023

By Matthew Campelli    16 Nov 2016
Ireland's bid was revealed at Dublin's Aviva Stadium

Representatives for Northern and Southern Ireland have come together to officially submit the nation’s bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Governments of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are backing the bid “through the provision of financial, infrastructural and services support”.

The Gaelic Athletic Association is also on board and has “placed its grounds at the disposal of the tournament”.

The organisations owns a number of venues – such as Croke Park, Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Pearse Stadium, Casement Park, Fitzgerald Stadium, MacHale Park, Nowlan Park and Celtic Park – which are likely to be found on Ireland’s long list of 12 potential stadiums.

This will be whittled down to eight-10 venues closer to the tournament.

Ireland will now be subject to a “detailed technical evaluation” by World Rugby before the governing body chooses a host next November. France, Italy and South Africa have also thrown their hats into the ring.

The bid was revealed at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium by Enda Kenny, minister for justice and equality; Northern Ireland deputy first minister Martin McGuinness; Northern Ireland minister for the economy Simon Hamilton; transport, tourism and sport minister Shane Ross; and Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) president Stephen Hilditch.

Dick Spring, the chair of the Bid Oversight Board, said the tournament was a “wonderful opportunity”.

“We intend to ensure Ireland’s proposition will be world-class and compelling,” he added.

“We believe Ireland is ready to stage a Rugby World Cup like no other. A tournament that will capture the imagination of the world. A festival of rugby that will be full of Irish people’s unique spirit and an event that will help rugby to reach new audiences throughout the world.”

In August, the governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland revealed that they had earmarked €1.5m (£1.3m, US$1.7m) to fund the bid.
