Local authority approval for York community stadium project
Plans for the development of a new community sports stadium on the outskirts of York have been given the green light by the City of York Council's (CYC) planning committee.
The Monks Cross Community Stadium will become a new home ground for both York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Football Club.
A clinical health centre providing outpatients facilities; an Institute for Sport and Wellbeing at St John's University; and a new 3G floodlit games court form part of the development.
Committee members voted 11-to-four in favour of the scheme, which will also lead to a new county-standard athletics track being built at York University's Heslington East Campus.
CYC cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism Sonja Crisp said: "This was a huge decision of great significance for York."
