TV cash secures dance mats for Shetland
Shetland's Active Schools Programme has been awarded more than £45,000 to acquire 24 ZigZag dance mats, following a public vote as part of ITV's The People's Millions.
The broadcaster launched The People's Millions programme in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund to distribute Lottery funding to a range of project designed to benefit local communities across the UK. Shetland Island residents are now able to use the ZigZag dance mats for free, with the funding covering venue hire and transport costs. The mats are also available for hire as part of the scheme.
Community groups, schools and youth workers can request use of the mats online as part of the scheme, while around 70 people have been trained in how to use the system. Active Schools coordinator Louise Jamieson said: "I chose to apply for funding for ZigZag's dance mats as we have a lack of opportunities for people in some areas of Shetland to use dance as a means of keeping fit, particularly modern dance to chart tunes."
