UK secures two further world championships to add to 'decade of sport'

By Tom Walker    08 May 2019
London won the bid to host the 2020 World Skateboarding Championships

The UK has won bids for two world championships of sport – adding to a long line of major events to be held in the country between 2019 and 2023.

The two events secured by the UK are the 2020 World Skateboarding Championships (to be hosted by London) and the 2023 World Trampoline Championships (Birmingham).

The duo of events brings the number of major events won by UK bidding teams this year (2019) to five.

In the past three months, successful bids have been announced for the UCI 2023 Cycling World Championships (Glasgow and Scotland), the 2023 World Canoe Slalom Championships (London), and the 2019 World Para-Swimming Championships (London).

According to high-performance agency UK Sport – which is the strategic lead for the bidding and staging of sporting events in the country – the five events alone are set to deliver more than £84m in economic impact, expose over 1.6m spectators to world-class sport and provide 2,000 opportunities for volunteers.

The five events add to an already impressive list of competitions, which include:

• 2020 Men’s World Curling Championships, Glasgow

• EURO 2020, London and Glasgow• Women’s EURO 2021, England

• 2021 Rugby League World Cup, England• 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham

• 2022 World Gymnastics Championships, Liverpool

The hosting of the events is part of a £200m masterplan to host a "decade of the finest sporting events", revealed by UK Sport in 2017.

This year, the UK will host the Cricket World Cup, the 2019 Netball World Cup and the 2019 World Road Cycling Championships.

"The UK has a decade of spectacular sport to look forward to," said minister for sport Mims Davies.

"Not only is this great news for the economy and for visitor numbers across the UK but it will be a fantastic way to inspire a generation of young people to take part in physical activity and develop a love of sport that continues for a lifetime."

Simon Morton, UK Sport's chief operating officer, added: “Through hosting global events such as these, sport has huge power to showcase the UK as an engaged and welcoming country.

“UK Sport’s vision is to inspire the nation; what better way to do that than by bringing the world’s best athletes to our doorstep and showcasing their inspirational talents through such a diverse range of events.”
