US the dominant force in international sporting politics

By Matthew Campelli    29 Jan 2016
Thomas Bach, the IOC president, scored 10 points for Germany

The United States is the most dominant nation in sporting politics, with citizens in more major international sporting positions than any other nation, according to a new study.

Titled the Formal Sports Political Power Index 2013-2015, the report found that the US topped the list with 309 points ahead of France (211), the United Kingdom (200), Italy (196) and Germany (185) in terms of sporting political power.

The data behind the index reviewed 1,673 positions across 120 international federations, with each position weighted in terms of role and federation on a scale of 1-10. For example, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) scores 10, while a board member of a non-Olympic European federation receives one.

According to Poul Broberg, the director of NOC and Sports Federation of Denmark (DIF) – the institution which conducted the study – ”values such as transparency and a strong democratic body are in high demand” in international sports federations, “especially following the corruption and doping scandals” of 2015.

“The six most influential countries were from either Europe or North America,” he added.

Asian nations made up some ground, with China (9th) and Japan (12th) increasing their representation by 19 and 33 positions respectively from the last study between 2011-2013.

“The increasing power in Asia is going to change the international political landscape,” said Broberg. “We have to pursue broader alliances across Europe, North America and Asia in order to effectively meet international challenges such as match-fixing, doping and corruption.”
