Women’s Sport Week: What’s on?
Women’s Sport Week kicks off today (3 October), with a number of organisations and governing bodies getting involved to stimulate participation.
NGBs such as British Cycling and British Triathlon will launch initiatives to celebrate the week.
The former will run schemes in Manchester (This Girl Can Cycle Coaching) and Kent (Women on Wheels) for women and girls of all ages and abilities. The latter will host nationwide This Girl Can events.
Local trusts are also getting involved. South Somerset is launching its In It Together programme, which offers pre taster sessions for disciplines such as Clubbercise, football, hockey and pilates. Similar projects are occurring in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hertford and Essex.
In addition, Team Beds and Luton is offering free Badminton courses for women over the age of 17.
The BBC is getting involved in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) initiative. On 4 October, Radio 5 Live will have a special programme about team sports, while BBC 1Xtra will host Body Talk on 6 October – a live discussion on women’s body image and sport.
The public service broadcaster will also host a Women’s Sport Trust discussion at New Broadcasting House in London about how women’s sport and athletes are represented by the media.
Women’s Sport Week has been established in association with Sport England, Women in Sport and the Women’s Sport Trust.
