Nuffield Health club café receives zero rating after hygiene inspection

By Deven Pamben    15 Feb 2017
Nuffield Health's Hull club café failed a food hygiene inspection report

Nuffield Health will be applying to have the café at its Hull club rescored after it failed a food hygiene inspection - receiving a rating of zero.

Inspectors went into the club and found a range of problems relating to food hygiene practices, resulting in Nuffield Health closing the club café, in East Yorkshire, for four days.

The inspection results in a five-page letter and report sent to Nuffield Health from Hull City Council found:

• that mouldy tomatoes were in a container in the fridge

• there was no soap to wash hands in the hand basin in the food preparation area and "there had been no supply for several months"

• a "large quantity" of food products were in the fridge and freezers that had past their use by dates

• opened ham and meatballs were given a shelf life of four days, which is too long

• a probe thermometer was being cleaned with hot water only

• neither soap nor a towel was provided at the wash basin in the staff toilet.

The 19-point report also highlighted temperature control issues relating to the storing of sandwiches and pasta dishes, a faulty dishwashing machine, iced-up freezers and a can opener "encrusted with food". The report said that the "structure, work surfaces and equipment within the kitchen were in a filthy condition".

A "Food Hygiene Rating Scheme" certificate and window sticker reflecting the findings, showing a rating from 0-5 was sent to Nuffield Health. Based on the inspection, the score given was a zero with the words "Urgent Improvement Necessary".

Paul Turner, Hull City Council's principal environmental health officer, said: "These findings are a result of a routine unannounced inspection and the officer was shocked at the findings. The club was closed for four days to make immediate improvements.

"We look forward to receiving an application for re-inspection of Nuffield."

A Nuffield Health spokesperson said: “The café within Nuffield Health’s Fitness & Wellbeing Hull Club was temporarily and voluntarily closed by Nuffield Health for four days from 2-5 December 2016 following recommendations from Environmental Health. The café was re-opened on 6 December and since then subsequent Environmental Health inspections have taken place and the inspectors have been extremely satisfied with the changes that have been made. We will be reapplying for a rescore in March and are confident that it will be a positive result.”
