Health scheme to target Scottish football fans
A new scheme has been launched by the Scottish Premier League (SPL) Trust, the Football Pools and the Scottish Government in a bid to tackle a number of men's health issues.
More than £250,000 has been provided by the Football Pools in addition to support from the government for the Football Fans in Training initiative, which aims to improve men's health levels across the country. The scheme will operate out of each of the 12 SPL member clubs and will enable supporters to sign up for free sessions designed to boost physical activity, improve diets and promote healthier lifestyles.
Each club will offer a 12-week course of classroom-based education and physical training as part of the initiative, devised by club coaches, sports and medical science professionals and the Public Health Directorate. Scottish public health and sport minister Shona Robison said: "The Scottish Government's Games legacy plan aims to inspire everyone in Scotland to get involved and take advantage of this unique opportunity to become a healthier nation.
"The Football Fans in Training initiative offers the perfect opportunity to get men thinking about their health and making changes that will benefit them in the future. I would encourage all those who are interested to get involved and become part of a legacy that Scotland can truly be proud of." Tony Higgins of the SPL Trust board added: "[Football Fans in Training] demonstrates that football clubs are no longer just about 90 minutes on Saturday but recognise their responsibility to involve supporters and the local community throughout the week."
