£28m Aberdeen Sports Village unveiled
A new multi-million pound sports complex has opened its doors to the public in Aberdeen, north east Scotland, on the site of the city's former Chris Anderson Stadium.
The £28m Aberdeen Sports Village, which is the result of a joint venture between Aberdeen City Council (ACC), the University of Aberdeen and sportscotland, aims to provide high quality sports provision in one location. Facilities at the complex include an indoor, 3G football pitch - the first of its kind in the UK, which has been created in part from recycled car tyres, as well as an indoor sports hall featuring sprung timber flooring, space for nine badminton courts and seating capacity for 350 spectators.
The complex also boasts a 135m, six-lane running straight with purpose-built areas for throwing and jumping events is also included and the 820sq m (8,826sq ft) Energy Zone, which incorporates 75 stations of cv equipment, 30 resistance machines, a Fitlinxx management system and a dedicated free weights area. Life Fitness and Rubicon have supplied the equipment, along with Concept2 rowing machines. Aberdeen Sports Village, which includes sports science facilities, a café and a crèche, was designed by Edinburgh-based Reiach and Hall Architects and built by Barr Construction. The complex has also been included as a pre-Games training venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
ACC leader John Stewart said: "By working in partnership, Aberdeen City Council, the University of Aberdeen and sportscotland have created more than just another leisure facility. Aberdeen Sports Village will be a hub of activity - providing sport activities for local residents, visitors to the city and training facilities for elite athletes." Louise Martin, chair of sportscotland, added: "The opening of the Aberdeen Sports Village marks another important milestone in improving sports provision in Scotland as part of the Scottish government's National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy.
"sportscotland worked closely with the other funding partners throughout the project to create a facility that would meet the diverse needs of the people of Aberdeen and the wider community; the Sports Village has certainly delivered on that promise."
