Players' union calls for winter World Cup
FIFPro, the representiative organisation for professional footballers across the world, has called for the 2022 Qatar World Cup to be held during winter.
According to FIFPro, the tournament should be rescheduled because the average summer temperature in Qatar is 41 degrees celsius and conditions will be "extremely' humid. The organisation claims that FIFA president Sepp Blatter and general secretary Jerome Valcke are receptive to the move, in order to ensure conditions for players are "suitable".
FIFPro technical committee secretary Tijs Tummers said: "Tourists are advised not to travel to Qatar in the summer months. Inhabitants of Qatar leave the country en masse during this period. "The summer months in Qatar also do not provide suitable conditions for a festival of football such as the World Cup should be, including for the supporters."
