Adelaide Oval is to undergo a major AUD450m transformation

The Government of South Australia and the Stadium Management Authority has appointed Mott MacDonald to lead a major redevelopment of Adelaide Oval.

First opened during the 1870s, the multi-sport venue is to undergo an extensive AU$450m (£283m, EUR333.4m, US$455.1m) overhaul.

UK-based Mott MacDonald will carry out design and project management services as part of the scheme, which aims establish a "world-class" 50,000-seat stadium.

The redeveloped Adelaide Oval will cater for cricket and Australian rules football, while the venue will also be able to host soccer for the first time in more than 50 years.

An international-standard indoor cricket centre is also being proposed as part of the stadium complex, which will become the home of South Australia cricket.

New stands will feature barbeque terraces; more than 2,000 dining spaces; hospitality suites; open boxes; and bars, with a plaza to be created on the south side of the river for events.

Mott MacDonald project director David Johnson said: "The Oval has a rich heritage and is an amazing setting - surrounded by parkland but within walking distance of the city centre.

"We're embracing the Oval's history, preserving those things that make it so special, while bringing the best of the new."
