£1m more funding for London facilities
BY Pete Hayman

London mayor Boris Johnson has announced that 20 projects at sports clubs, playing fields and recreation grounds across the capital are to benefit from a further £1m of funding.

The additional support forms part of the £15.5m Sports Legacy Fund, which has attracted a combination of match funding and private sector backing to now stand at more than £30m.

Among the latest awards is a £100,000 grant to the London Playing Fields Foundation for a revamp of all-weather football pitches at Douglas Eyre Sports Centre in Waltham Forest.

Woodcote High School and South London Harriers will receive £200,000 towards plans for a new athletics track and the refurbishment of grass pitches in Croydon.

The AHOY Centre in Greenwich has also received a six-figure sum; £100,000 to help fund a new building that will house rowing training facilities and classrooms.

Other beneficiaries include the refurbishment of an athletics track at Paddington Recreation Ground (£44,000) and new rifle ranges for the Stock Exchange Rifle Club (£75,000).

Johnson said: "This latest round of funding has been carefully targeted towards projects that will help to inspire even more Londoners to try out something new to help them get fit and active."
