Sport England has published a quarterly update of its Active People survey to compare the demographics of sports participation in England against its annual target to April 2009.

A sample of 190,000 people revealed that satisfaction with local sports provision has increased and around 6.8 million adults (aged 16 and over) play sport at moderate intensity three times a week.

However, participation by 18 year olds has remained unchanged during the past 12 months and some sports have even reported a decrease in participation.

In a bid to continue to grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport, the organisation plans to invest £480m in 46 national governing bodies of sport over the next four years.
