Conservatives would focus on Lottery funding and Olympic legacy

By Tom Walker    08 May 2008

The Conservatives have vowed not to “tear up” the work done by Labour in terms of sports strategy, should they win the next election.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) in London yesterday (7 May 2008), Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt, said that his party was “broadly in favour of the work done by Labour”.

According to Hunt, the Conservatives would only make two major changes to sports policy if they came to power – firstly returning the National Lottery to its original purpose by reinstating a system of four awarding bodies, resulting in the increase of funding available for sport.

The second change would see the Conservatives making a greater commitment to legacy planning for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
