A Peterborough sports centre will close today to allow major refurbishment work to take place.

Peterborough City Council is investing £280,000 into the six-week project at Werrington Sports Centre, which will include the refurbishment of the centre's Planet Pulse gym and installation of new sports equipment including three pursuit cycles, six elevated treadmills and a fluid rower.

The sports hall, squash courts and changing rooms will also be revamped while the carpet and fencing on the astroturf pitches will be replaced.

Councillor Matthew Lee, the cabinet member for community services, said: "Once the work is complete residents will be presented with a much-approved sports centre with a bright new look and better equipment."

The centre is due to reopen fully on Thursday 4 September, and a free open weekend is being planned for 6-7 September.
