Plans have been unveiled to replace outdated facilities in Newark, Lincolnshire with a new £13m leisure centre in nearby Balderton.

The proposed centre would replace the Grove Leisure Centre, which was built in 1968.

The new facility would include a larger swimming pool, sports hall and gym than the previous offering and could be open as early as 2016 if plans are approved later this year.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has estimated more than 5,000 people will use the facility in the first year.

Grove Leisure Centre currently has more than 4,000 members.

Roger Blaney, leader for the district council, said the scheme would "create a lasting legacy" and help meet the growing demand for sports facilities in the area.
