£2.25m Peak District cycle project launches

By Pete Hayman    30 Apr 2010

A new £2.25m scheme has been launched by the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) in a bid to encourage visitors and residents to cycle more.

The Pedal Peak District project - funded by the Department for Transport through Cycling England - is targeted at people who don't regularly or only occasionally cycle. Residents and visitors who sign up will be able to access new cycling tips and information and maps of routes; as well as set up personal goals that will be rewarded upon completion.

A new route between Bakewell and Buxton, Derbyshire, is also planned as part of the initiative, with four former railway tunnels to reopen to the public when the route is completed in 2011. PDNPA head of communications John Fern said: "The Peak District National Park is one of the most beautiful places to go cycling in the country so we can offer the ideal setting for that first cycling experience - or rekindle the passion if it is years since you last rode a bike."
