£32m Edgbaston plans under threat

By Luke Tuchscherer    04 Nov 2009

The £32m plans to expand the Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham have come under fire from local residents.

The Cannon Hill Neighbourhood Forum has asked local law firm Public Law Solicitors to seek a judicial review over the City Council’s decision to grant Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) planning permission, specifically regarding the proposed 160ft floodlights.

The forum claims that the council’s planning committee did not conduct a study into the effect of the enlarged stadium - and its night time test matches - on the local community.

If the High Court approves the review, then the plans – which include new stands, a leisure centre and a hotel – could be seriously held up and cost the club dearly.

There is the chance of compromise however. The Birmingham Post quoted the forum’s spokesperson Vijay Sarathy as saying: “It all depends on the council really. There’s still room for negotiation without going for judicial review.

“The fact remains that the English Cricket Board’s minimum requirements for test match grounds do not state that you must have floodlights. But, at the end of the day, if we have to proceed to a judicial review that is what we’ll do.”
