£49.5m allocated for 10 multi-sport sites in Scotland

11 Aug 2004

The minister for finance and public services in Scotland, Andy Kerr, has announced that £49.5m has been allocated from the National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy fund for the development of multi-sport facilities across 10 sites.

Aberdeen City Council received £5m, while the City of Edinburgh Council was given £17m for three sites, as was Glasgow City Council. Falkirk Council received £3m, North Lanarkshire Council received £5m and Stirling Council received £2.5m.

The money will enable a network of facilities for key sports to be established around Scotland, which will include indoor multi-sport training facilities, a national indoor sports arena and two versatile municipal stadia.

The network will be based on the six regions of Scotland covered by the Area Institutes of Sport – namely, east of Scotland, Grampian, Highland, Tayside and Fife and west of Scotland.

Kerr’s announcement marks the completion of the stage one application process. The funding allocations are an indication of the level of award that successful applicants can expect at the next stage of the process, providing that their project is developed in line with approved proposals and conditions.

The chair of Sportscotland, Alastair Dempster, said: “Significant investment is required in Scotland’s national and regional sports facilities if we are to be able to develop successful sporting generations in the future.

“In addition to those schemes approved for funding, we are committed to working with governing bodies of sport and partner in Highland, Tayside and Fife, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders to explore the options for the development of regional facilities in the future and ensure that our aspirations for a complete regional network are fully met.”
