£5.5m boost for Tayside and Fife sports

By Pete Hayman    05 Nov 2009

Plans for the construction of new sports facilities in the Tayside and Fife region, as part of 2014 Commonwealth Games legacy proposals, have been handed a £5.5m boost by sportscotland.

Three towns and cities across the region are in line to receive funding from the Sports Facilities Fund for the construction of new leisure centres, each boasting a competition-standard swimming pool. Dundee has received the largest share of the latest sportscotland investment, which will see £3m used to help finance plans for a new complex that will include Scotland's latest 50m swimming pool.

Meanwhile, Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes will receive £1m and £1.5m respectively to fund projects that will each boast a 25m, eight-lane pool. Kirkcaldy's planned new leisure centre will also include a smaller teaching pool with moveable floor, a 60-station fitness suite an aerobics studio, a play centre and a sports hall. In addition to the new pool at the upgraded Fife Institute in Glenrothes, facilities will include a training pool with moveable floor, a remedial pool, an 85-station fitness suite, a strength and conditioning area and an eight-court sports hall.

Fife Institute will also benefit from an aerobics studio, two squash courts, two multi-purpose rooms, three five-a-side, 3G football pitches, a tennis court, a new hockey pitch and a resurfaced athletics track. Louise Martin, chair of sportscotland, said: "sportscotland has a clear focus on developing Scotland's sporting infrastructure and central to that is a network of facilities designed to enhance the lives of local communities and to create the right environment for our young athletes to discover and develop their sporting talent."

Scottish sports minister Shona Robison added: "These facilities will be an excellent community resource for people in Dundee, Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy and will offer young people more and better opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity."
