£9m leisure facility opens in Cumbernauld
A new £9m sports and leisure complex, which is scheduled to be used as a venue at the 2011 International Children's Games, has opened to the public in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.
Designed by Edinburgh-based JM Architects, the two-storey Broadwood Sport and Leisure Centre was delivered by Mansell - part of the London-based Balfour Beatty Group - adjacent to Clyde Football Club's (CFC) existing 8,000-seat stadium. Facilities at the 3,800sq m (40,903sq ft) centre include a 90-station fitness suite and a spinning studio equipped by Technogym, two aerobics studios and a multi-purpose, four-court sports hall, which can cater for a range of indoor sports.
A three-level soft play area, which has been designed for babies, toddlers and older children, a martial arts studio, beauty treatment and therapy rooms, meeting facilities and a café also form part of the new Broadwood Sport and Leisure Centre. It is anticipated that the complex will complement the existing facilities at Broadwood Stadium, which incorporate two 3G seven-a-side football pitches, four 3G five-a-side football pitches and a full-size 3G football pitch.
North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL), which was formed by North Lanarkshire Council in 2006 to deliver sports and leisure facilities across the region, will be responsible for the operation of the new centre. NLL chair, Councillor Jim Logue, said: "Broadwood is now a major sports and leisure venue in a prime location. We are hoping that it can be used by countries as a pre-training facility ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth games, 2012 Olympic games and 2011 Children's Games."
