2009 Art Fund Prize shortlist unveiled

By Pete Hayman    08 May 2009

Four museums and galleries have been shortlisted for the 2009 Art Fund Prize, one of the UK's largest arts prizes, which aims to recognise the most innovative cultural schemes at venues across Britain.

The candidates for the £100,000 prize include Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, which has been shortlisted for the second time in three years after incorporating new technology in the development of a new education programme for young people. A new museum dedicated to the 250-year history of the Wedgwood pottery company in Stoke-on-Trent is in the running, along with Ruthin Craft Centre: The Centre for Applied Arts in Denbighshire, Wales, and Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham, London.

The winner of the prestigious award, which is being sponsored by The Art Fund for the second year, will be announced at a ceremony on 18 June at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. David Barrie, director of The Art Fund, said: "These four museums have made it to the shortlist because of their inspiring approaches to education, innovative ways to engage young people and general all round achievement and excellence.

"This exciting shortlist for The Art Fund Prize demonstrates once again the health and energy of the UK's museums and galleries." The Art Fund Prize for museum and galleries is administered by Museum Prize, charitable organisation established in 2002 by The Art Fund, the Campaign for Museums, the Museums Association and National Heritage.
