Access All Areas in Edinburgh
Sports trust Edinburgh Leisure recently hosted an event designed to encourage people with disabilities to have a go at a range of physical activities they may not have tried before.
Supported by Paralympian swimmer Jim Anderson and Bejing Paralympic athletes Sean Fraser and Kevin Simpson, Access All Areas was attended by more than 90 people who got to try out sports including wheelchair tennis and basketball, boccia, trampolining and athletics. "I've trained with Edinburgh Leisure for many years and the sporting programmes on offer for disabled people are great. Without the proper training and coaching facilities, I would never have reached my dream of getting on the podium at Bejing," said Fraser.
"I'm living proof to others that you can achieve your goals and I hope I can in some way encourage other people to become involved with the sporting programmes on offer at Edinburgh Leisure." Following the event, the sports trust has launched a disability athletics class at Drumbrae Leisure Centre open to anyone aged eight or over who has a physical or learning disability. Participants get to try a variety of athletics events including hurdles, long jump, javelin, shot putt and an obstacle relay, which incorporates running, hurdling and throwing.
