London's West End theatres have reported an eighth consecutive year of record box office revenues in 2011, according to latest figures from the Society of London Theatre (SOLT).

Box office sales for the last 12 months reach more than £528m - a 3.1 per cent increase on a like-for-like basis, when compared with 2010. It was the third time sales topped £500m.

SOLT attributed the continued growth to sell-out shows including new musical Matilda The Musical and the ongoing success of Les Misérables, now in its 26th year.

"Theatre-goers have acted with their feet and wallets and shown just how much they value a trip to one of our world-class shows," said SOLT president Mark Rubinstein.

"We can confirm buoyant Box Office advances for 2012, a year in which we look forward to welcoming millions more national and international visitors through our theatre doors."
