April closure for Glasgow museum

By Pete Hayman    19 Feb 2010

Culture and Sport Glasgow (CSG) has confirmed that the city's Museum of Transport, which opened in its current location in 1988, will close its doors on 18 April.

The closure is to allow exhibits from the attraction to be moved to the new £74m Riverside Museum, which has been designed by Zaha Hadid and is scheduled to open to the public in 2011. Glasgow City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Glasgow Harbour have contributed funding towards the new attraction, which will house the Museum of Transport's collections of trams, trains, cars and ship models.

The Riverside Museum, which will have 7,500sq m (80,729 sq ft) of public space with more than 3,000 objects on display, is being built by contractor HBG and forms part of a wider regeneration scheme for the city's harbour. CSG chair Bailie Liz Cameron said: "The Museum of Transport has always been the source of great pride and affection for the people of Glasgow and is always among the most visited attractions in the city.

"The new museum will be home to many of the much loved exhibits housed in an iconic building with space for many new attractions which will educate and captivate visitors for generations to come."
