April relaunch for new-look Roman museum
Northumberland's Housesteads Roman Fort, one of the most complete Roman forts in the UK, will reopen to the public in April following the first phase of a renovation project.
English Heritage closed the museum in October last year to carry out the revamp of the site in partnership with the National Trust and Northumberland National Park Authority.
The first phase has cost more than £1m and includes an overhaul of the museum, which will enable visitors to access the remains of the barracks with new and improved interpretation.
An interactive and audio-visual exhibition examining life at Vercovicium, the hilltop fortress and civilian settlement to the north of the Roman empire will also be provided.
Meanwhile, the National Trust will carry out work later this year to feature an upgrade of the visitor welcome and a remodelling of its visitor centre at the fort.
