Architects support Doon St plans

By Luke Tuchscherer    28 Feb 2008

The proposed 144m (472ft) tall Doon St building, which would feature a public swimming pool, a leisure centre and 329 apartments, has received the support of many leading architects.

The project – the brainchild of Coin Street Community Builders, Greenwich Leisure and Rambert Dance Company – is currently under a public inquiry, owing to objections that the building would spoil views across Central London.

English Heritage ran a campaign to have the application called in by Hazel Blears because of the effect it may have on views of Somerset House.

However, architects including Rafael Vinoly, Lord Richard Rogers, Marco Goldschmied, Julia Barfield and David Marks, have all offered their support to the proposal, with Rogers, for example, saying that “it will have no discernable effect other than adding to the vitality and quality of London’s skyline”.

The building was designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, and has already had its height dropped from 172m (564ft).

The public inquiry will end on 7 March.
