Assembly calls for 2012 ticket answers

By Pete Hayman    19 Mar 2010

London Assembly members have called on the organisers of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to address four main issues regarding the event's ticketing strategy.

The economic development, culture, sport and tourism committee has urged the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to reveal how many tickets will be made available to local residents. LOCOG is due to publish its ticketing strategy for the 2012 Games later this year, but is being asked to clarify how many Londoners will have access to tickets and how much they will cost.

International Olympic Committee rules set out how many tickets must be reserved for Games representatives, the government, media and national Olympic committees. Dee Doocey, chair of the London Assembly's economic development, culture, sport and tourism committee, said: "Londoners have told us they want to know more about 2012 tickets and I hope LOCOG will be able to work with us to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy the Games.

"The key issue is simple: how many people will be ahead of the average Londoner in the queue for Olympic tickets." Meanwhile, London mayor Boris Johnson has confirmed that Olympic Park land currently owned by the London Development Agency (LDA) will be transferred to the new Olympic Park Legacy Company.

LDA chief executive Sir Peter Rogers said: "This deal will give the legacy from 2012 every chance of success. Our negotiations with government have produced a good deal for London." Image: ODA
