Bespoke Cinema-Planetarium opens in the Netherlands ahead of Europe-wide expansion
Archiview, a Dutch architectural practice, has created a planetarium-come-cinema in Groningen, the Netherlands, with plans to open a further 20 across Europe in the near future.
Called “Infoversum” and now open to the public, the structure is effectively a 3D theatre aimed at promoting science and knowledge. Films are projected on to the ceiling of the planetarium showing educational footage and visitors can experience a multi-dimensional view of the universe through 3D technology whilst inside the auditorium.
The concept comes from Edwin Valentijn – a professor at the University of Groningen. Valentijn was asked to develop a space that would make science more accessible and enticing to the general public. Archiview was chosen to develop the project and worked with Valentijn throughout the process. Constructed of pre-rusted steel and glass with a white dome in the centre, the structure looks – fittingly – like something from outer space.
The interior is split over two floors, there is full auditorium for screening films, an interactive lobby space filled with digital exhibitions and a roof terrace to allow visitors to view rooftop projections.
