Big hitters aiming to win tennis contract
A number of leading construction companies are lining up bids to build a £40m tennis complex at Roehampton, south-west London.
The facilities at the proposed National Tennis Centre (NTC), will include six indoor and 18 outdoor courts, training and medical facilities and accommodation for staff and players.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) is hoping the centre will help promote tennis in general and produce the first British grand slam champion since Virginia Wade lifted the Wimbledon ladies title in 1977.
The short-listed contractors – which include Laing O’Rourke, Sir Robert McAlpine, Kier, John Sisk and Exterior – have until mid-February to submit their tenders.
LTA hopes to finalise details with the planning officials within the following weeks.
Last month, the LTA announced its new marketing structure, focused on attracting youngsters from all backgrounds and of all abilities into Tennis. Details: www.lta.org.uk
