Boca Juniors plans to supercharge its iconic stadium
Boca Juniors FC – one of the best-supported football clubs in Argentina – has released plans for a new stadium, which would be the largest in the country.
The Super Bombonera, which would sit on the site of the current Bombonera stadium, would have a capacity of 77,495 – almost 30,000 seats more than Boca’s current home.
Local architect Manteola - Sanchez Gomez - Santos - Solsona - Sallaberry - Vinson (MSGSSSV) is on board to design the venue.
Around three-quarters of the fans will be seated, with the remaining spaces for standing spectators.
According to Argentine newspaper Clarin, there is an alternative plan in place due to opposition from some quarters. However, the club’s hierarchy is keen for the club to remain in the Boca area of Buenos Aires.
If the plan goes ahead, it would become Argentina’s largest stadium. That record is currently held by the 76,000-capacity Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti, which is the home of bitter city rival River Plate.
