Cardiff swimming club head coach wins award
City of Cardiff Swimming Club head coach Dave Haller was announced Welsh Coach of the Year at the annual Sports Council for Wales awards.
Haller – who coaches 1500m Olympic bronze medallist and Commonwealth gold medallist, David Davies – picked up the award at the event held at the Institute of Sport in Cardiff for the second time in three years.
Davies said: “My medals are as much Dave’s as they are mine. He is with me at every training session, he’s a great motivator and we are so lucky to have him here in Wales – his experience is second to none, his knowledge is superb and more importantly he’s an understanding coach and a great person.”
Scottish Commonwealth medallist Gregor Tait is another of Haller's charges. Tait moved to Cardiff in 2004 and won two individual gold medals and a bronze in Melbourne earlier this year.
Other award winners were: female coach of the year – Sue Parry, Abergele Swimming Club; performance volunteer – Darrell Maynard, athletics in Cwmbran; community volunteer – Glyn Walters, Garw Valley Tennis Club, Bridgend; disabled performance – Neil Smith, British Cycling, Newport; disabled community – Matthew Broadbent, swimming and boccia, Penarth.
