Celts, Romans and Crannogs: celebrating Perthshire archaeology month

04 Jun 2007

Splash, clash, dive and dig are some of the activities on offer this June at the Scottish Crannog Centre by Kenmore, Loch Tay in celebration of Perthshire Archaeology Month.

This is the fifth annual celebration of the region's rich and diverse heritage, and the programme is packed with guided walks, talks, excavations, and special hands-on events.

On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June, the streets of Kenmore and the South Loch Tay road will resonate with the sound of hobnailed boots and sandals as the Roman Antonine Guard march to the Crannog Centre.

Starting from Kenmore Square, visitors may join in the procession and volunteer for a clash between the legionnaires and the Crannog Celts.

For the pacifists attending, there will also be stalls featuring costumes, artefacts, weaponry and authentic food to taste from both camps. The Iron Age ovens will be stoked up for bread and pancakes to accompany a thick Roman stew.

Archaeologists from the centre will then head underwater on Saturday 23 June in their popular 'Come and Try Underwater Archaeology' in Kenmore swimming pool. Members of the dive team will lead enthusiastic adults and youngsters from eight years old in snorkelling and scuba diving to carry out a range of archaeological tasks on the bottom of the pool.

These include drawing, planning, and measuring the positions of ‘artefacts’. Special writing paper and drawing boards will be provided, and a gridded one-metre square frame will be placed over an underwater ‘feature’ to give the divers a go at recording in the way archaeologists do on land.

The following day on Sunday, 24 June, the Crannog Crew have planned a special simulated excavation in their 'Sandpit Archaeology: the Little Dig' event involving the discovery of a prehistoric feature and artefacts from several periods in history. Participants will learn how to trowel for clues to the past and how to record their finds. No experience is necessary and all materials will be provided.
