Chennai set for world's largest cricket stadium
By Pete Hayman 26 Aug 2008
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has reportedly unveiled plans to build the world's largest cricket stadium in Chennai, India.
Proposals for the new stadium, which will be built for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, include a retractable roof to avoid washouts, and a seating capacity of more than 100,000. The stadium is set to be built on a 50-acre site in Karunkuzhipallam village, located in the Kanchipuram district 25km from Chennai, and will offer double the seating capacity of Chennai's current MA Chidambaram stadium. Speaking to Times of India, TNCA's president, N Srnivasan, said: "The government has leased out the land to us for 30 years and we have remiitedd Rs 1 lakh as payment. TNCA's executive committee will meet on Thursday to discuss plans, including awarding of construction contract." TNCA's honorary secretary, KS Viswanathan, added that although the stadium's capacity will be more than Kolkata's Eden Gardens, or the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, an exact figure has yet to be determined.
