Children’s fitness centre prepares for launch
Memberships have gone on sale for a children’s fitness facility at Edmonton Leisure Centre.
Due to open this month, the SHOKK Youth Fitness centre will cater for eight- to 16-year-olds and will be managed Enfield Leisure Centres Trust.
The project has been funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and supported by Enfield Council, which sees it as a key part of its sports strategy.
Fitness manager Robert Bourne said the centre will develop links with local primary care trusts, GPs and schools.
“The facility will provide not just an area for exercise but a springboard for young people to get involved in a number of other sports and leisure activities all designed to keep them fit, healthy and importantly fight against the dangers of young obesity,” he said.
The trust said there is also potential to open the facility to mature members during down times.
Meanwhile, it has also developed a fitness area for 10- to 16-year-olds at Southgate Leisure Centre to cater for increasing demand.
Due to open this month, Junior Cardio will provide a supervised fitness area in addition to the limited junior fitness time slots available in the main gym.
Parents can work out alongside their children in the Junior Cardio area and the trust is also considering opening a SHOKK facility at the centre in future.
