World's largest spokeless Ferris wheel opens in China
Weifang, China, is now home to an engineering marvel following the opening of the largest spokeless Ferris wheel in the world.
Sitting over the Bailang River, the Bailang Bridge Ferris Wheel is located on the 1,771ft (540m) bridge that crosses the body of water in Shandong Province.
Tianjin Craftsman Manufacture constructed the record-breaking wheel, which is the first to be built using a kite grid design, also described as a “dragon spine”.
The body of the 4,600-tonne wheel does not spin. Instead, the 36 cars are rotated around the circle. The wheel has a diameter of 125m (410ft) and a total height of 145m (475ft) – making it taller than structures such as the London Eye.
The gargantuan installation, which stands out over a very flat backdrop, has WiFi included in all pods, and even includes televisions for those not interested in taking in views of the Bailang River.
China Construction Sixth Engineering Division is behind the project, with its general superintendent Sun Xuping saying: “we sincerely hope that the ferris wheel will become the landmark architecture of urban landscape of Weifang."
