Clubs to receive share of World Cup benefits
FIFA has announced that 400 clubs affiliated with 55 member associations across the world are to receive a share of the benefits from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
In 2008, FIFA's executive committee set aside US$40m (£25.7m) for the 2010 tournament and a further US$70m (£44.9m) from the 2014 event in Brazil to share among clubs. A club's share of the funding is to be determined in reference to the number of players that were selected to appear for their respective nation at the 2010 World Cup.
Spain's FC Barcelona has received the largest share of the funding, receiving US$866,267 (£555,678) from FIFA. Chelsea and Liverpool were also among the top five earners. Payments were distributed via member associations to the clubs of more than 730 players.
