Coca-Cola to boost swimming participation
Coca-Cola Great Britain has revealed its plans to get 22,000 more people swimming as part of a wider bid to increase participation in sport ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.
The drinks group is supporting the training and development of more than 120 new coaches and teachers after making a £50,000 contribution to the Swimming Trust. Funding will be used for a Teacher Coach Education Grant Fund, which is set to provide training opportunities for volunteers at swimming, diving and other watersports clubs across the country.
It follows the success of Coca-Cola Great Britain's Schweppes Abbey Well 'Schwim Free' campaign, which allowed consumers to swap bottle tops for free swims. In the campaign's first year, 47,000 free swims were taken. Jon Woods, the company's country manager, said: "Almost 50,000 took part in the first year of the scheme and we hope this year will be even bigger and better with 440 pools signed up, including 90 across London."
The Swimming Trust chair Dennis Yeoman added: "The trust will be able to increase the number of quality trained swimming teachers and coaches, giving more people the opportunity to learn a fundamental life skill that will help them stay active throughout their lives."
