Council backs £2m Weymouth seafront scheme

By Pete Hayman    06 Aug 2009

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council (WPBC) has approved revised proposals for the £2m regeneration of the seafront promenade in Weymouth, Dorset, despite the withdrawal of government funding.

Councillors met to discuss the plans after the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) announced in June that it was cutting back investment in schemes across south west England by £56m, which included £6.6m earmarked for Weymouth. The scheme includes the restoration of historic Victorian shelters along the promenade, new street lighting and an artistic lighting scheme, while licences for some of Weymouth's beach concession will be put out to tender.

However, three attractions - the Punch and Judy show, sand sculptures and the donkey rides - will not be subject to the tender process and will be reviewed by WPBC separately in September. WPBC's total contribution to the revised scheme is expected to be £948,000, including the remaining £160,000 from the council's seafront regeneration budget, an estimated £500,000 from the sale of two seafront buildings, £200,000 from the capital budget and £88,000 from the Townscape Heritage Initiative.

Meanwhile, Dorset County Council will commit up to £400,000 for new street lighting and improvements to highways and transport, while Arts Council England will provide a further £400,000. English Heritage has also agreed to contribute a potential £300,000 for the heritage improvements.
