Building work on Bromsgrove leisure centre to start

Building work on a £13.7million leisure centre in Bromsgrove will begin next week.

Morgan Sindall Group is building the facility in the Worcestershire town next to the existing Dolphin Centre, which will remain open until the new one is up and running in 2017. The centre will feature two swimming pools, including one with a movable floor for disability access, an indoor climbing wall, three fitness studios and a 100-station gym.

Planning permission for an £11.5m facility had been granted in December 2015. In January this year, a £1.5m grant from Sport England was added to the budget. However, in May, Bromsgrove District Council had to pump in another £700,000 because of rising costs of building works in the current market.

The centre will be completed in four phases. First the new centre will be built and opened to the public. Then the old centre will be demolished, and then the new centre’s surrounding areas and car parking will be finished, which will complete Morgan Sindall’s work. Finally, the current car park will be closed and made available for redevelopment.

The leisure centre is the latest redevelopment in Bromsgrove under a strategic Town Centre Regeneration Partnership that has led a revamp of the High Street, brought major retail developments to the town, and overhauled public buildings.

Charles Johnston, Sport England property director, said: “We are delighted to offer £1.5 million of National Lottery funding to help people in living in Bromsgrove live more active lives. With plans for an impressive range of sporting facilities, this new centre will be huge asset for the region. I wish the council every success in delivering this first-class facility.”

Ben Shearman, Morgan Sindall senior contracts manager, said: “This is a great project to be involved with and we’re pleased to get construction started. The new leisure centre will offer the people of Bromsgrove a fantastic environment in which to exercise and we’re confident it be well received when it opens towards the end of next year.”
