Council takes over water sports centre
Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has officially taken over the operation and management of the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, from Sport England.
The handover took place on 1 April for the site, which is now in line to receive more than £10m funding for the development of new additions to the centre, including Flow Riders, indoor surfing facilities which would be among the first of their kind in Britain. Existing facilities are also set to be improved as part of plans for the venue, which has recently seen the completion of upgrade to the white water rafting course in a bid to establish it as the foremost training venue for Team GB until the Olympics venue is completed in 2011.
Chris Baron, NCC cabinet member for environment and sustainability, added: "Over the coming years we want to build upon the success of the centre, so that it is regarded as one of the premier sporting and recreational attractions in the country."
