Council to keep snowsports centre open
Midlothian Snowsports Centre is to remain open to the public after the local authority agreed to continue running the venue amid concerns over its long-term financial viability.
Recommendations set out in a joint review of the centre, which was carried out by Midlothian Council and sportscotland, was approved at a meeting of the full council on 27 August. Among the measures agreed by the local authority was retaining control of the facility near Edinburgh, while it is also set to approach sportscotland for a formal investment package offer worth up to £600,000.
However, Midlothian Council has repeated a call to the Scottish government and other interested organisations to come forward and help safeguard the long-term future of the venue. Earlier this year, the council said the centre's projected deficit of £529,000 for 2009-10 would be unsustainable with the authority facing at a £25m cut in central government funding.
Midlothian Council leader Derek Milligan said: "The council has agreed to keep Midlothian Snowsports Centre open, however we call on the Scottish Government and other parties to step forward and provide national funding for this national facility. "We have to save at least £25million over the next four years so the council cannot simply keep subsidising the centre. We welcome the potential capital funding support from sportscotland and thank them for their input into this report."
