Adam Crozier has resigned as chief executive of the Football Association.

Crozier, who was appointed three years ago to modernise the FA, had been accused by some county FA officials of being 'too autocratic' and not informing them about negotiations that affected their clubs.

The Premier League was particularly unhappy about a £5m sponsorship deal for the England squad which allowed the FA to use England players without any benefit to their clubs - saying that it was not fully consulted over the deal.

Crozier's resignation came about after he refused to compromise on his opposition to plans by Premier League chairmen who want to create a Professional Game Board to ensure they can oversee all the FA's commercial affairs.

Crozier has agreed to stay on until a replacement is found. Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, is tipped as a possible candidate to take over.
