Crunch time for London 2012 Olympics bid
A group of 13 assessors from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has begun its London visit to inspect the city’s bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
It is the delegation’s second stop on its five-city trip and follows a visit to Madrid last month.
During the four-day stay, the team will consider key aspects of the bid, including venues, infrastructure, public support and legacy – one of the London bid's main strengths.
The assessors will visit Lord's, Wembley Stadium and Wimbledon, as well as the proposed site of the Olympic village in Stratford.
The visit comes as minister of sport Tessa Jowell embarks on an Olympic quest of her own to boost support for the bid from outside the capital.
She said: “This is going to be an important and hectic week for everyone connected with the Olympic bid, but I have made time to do this tour because it is paramount that people outside London realise a 2012 Games would have benefits for all – economic, social and sporting.
The IOC delegation will be in London from 16 - 19 February, with the announcement declaring the 2012 hosts coming on July 6 in Singapore.
