David Haythornthwaite announces exciting £18m community football stadium for Kirkham
Plans have been revealed to transform a 32-acre site in Kirkham, Lancashire into an £18m community sports, science and education centre.
Plans for the Mill Farm site, drawn up by Frank Whittle Partnership, include a new 6,000-capacity home stadium for non-league AFC Fylde, a large indoor sports science building, a range of all-weather pitches for community use and a 63-bedroom hotel.
There will also be a food store, a distribution centre with associated office space and a public house.
The new AFC Fylde stadium will feature a 2,000 all-seater main stand with supporters' bar, executive boxes and a function room. The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League club currently plays at the 1,800-capacity Kellamergh Park and averages around 400 spectators per game - but has announced ambitious plans to climb the English football league system.
David Haythornthwaite, chair of AFC Fylde, said: "The Fylde sports and science park is an ambitious investment in the local economy.
"The new stadium will provide us with an excellent home and a springboard to future success on and off the pitch. It will also provide local schoolchildren with a modern, state-of-the-art sports science facility - as well as excellent community sports facilities which will be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities."
The masterplan will now be guided through the public consultation and planning process by Paul Walton, director of PWA Planning in Preston.
Public consultation will begin later this month (September) with a number of local meetings planned. The public will also get the chance to see a scale model of the proposed development.
