Derby eyes new £70m extreme sports venue
A private sector group has reportedly approached Derby City Council (DCC) with a view to developing a major new £70m extreme sports complex on land near Pride Park stadium.
According to the Derby Telegraph, The Cube would be the first facility of its kind to be developed in Europe, accommodating around 20 activities including rock-climbing.
The 5-acre (2-hectare) complex has been earmarked for a site owned by Network Rail, close to a proposed new £22m multi-use sports arena designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects.
DCC leader Philip Hickson told the newspaper: "Combined with the council's multi-use sports arena which is being built at Pride Park and Derby Football Club's own plans for its plaza, this could make Derby a primary leisure destination.
"The Cube is not about traditional sports - this is extreme sports and it will take Derby out of the shadows and on to the stage."
