Detailed plans revealed for Kings Cross Central
Argent St George has today released detailed plans for its proposed redevelopment of Kings Cross.
Following four years of extensive planning and consultation, planning applications covering the 67 acres of land between King’s Cross and St Pancras Station have been submitted to both Camden and Islington councils for outline consent.
The mixed-use development will cover 742,000sq m including 10 new public spaces, 1,800 new homes and 20 major new public routes.
There will also be refurbishment, investment and new uses for over 20 historic buildings and structures, including the four listed gas holder frames – which will be moved and could provide a home for shops and leisure facilities.
Roger Madelin, of Argent St George, said: “We share the aspiration of Camden and Islington councils and local people to see the major regeneration of King’s Cross started and completed as soon as possible.
“Our proposals will make King’s Cross a stunning and integral part of central London – one that combines the best of outstanding heritage with new design of the highest quality.”
He added that the site would create up to 30,000 jobs with a ‘distinctive mix’ of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants as well as community, health, education and cultural uses.
It is also thought that space around the public areas will be provided for museums, theatres, art galleries and music venues.
If detailed planning consent is granted by both councils, site work will not commence before the Channel Tunnel development is complete.
Work on the Tunnel is currently scheduled to finish in 2007. Details: www.londoncommunications.co.uk
