DfT plans 2012 disabled access upgrade

By Pete Hayman    22 Mar 2010

Disabled sports fans are set to benefit from improved access at three railway stations near to 2012 Olympic venues under plans confirmed by the Department for Transport (DfT).

Slough, Wembley Central and Hackney Central stations are all set to be upgraded in time for the the London Games in order to offer step-free access under the Government's Access for All programme. Around £2.5m will be spent on upgrading Slough station, which will benefit from three new lifts to assist people with disabilities travelling to Windsor Royal Station for boating events at Eton Dorney Lake.

Wembley Central station will also benefit from the provision of three new lifts at a cost of £2.2m, which will serve Wembley Stadium - due to host football events - and Wembley Arena. Meanwhile, Hackney Central is in line for £3.5m worth of upgrades, with a new bridge and two lifts to be installed in order to help fans on their way to the Olympic village in Stratford.

Work is due to get underway in 2011 and is scheduled for completion in 2012 ahead of the Olympic Games' Opening Ceremony.
