Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, US, has added a US$17.5m (£9m, 13.1m euro) steel rollercoaster to its collections of rides.

Mystery Mine – the largest capital investment in the company’s history – will be set in an abandoned coalmine on the park’s existing Timber Canyon area.

Visitors will climb on board a passenger mine cart, which will plunge them into darkness along a 1,811-ft (168-m) track through the ruins of an early 1900’s themed mine.

The 2.5-minute ride will feature a 95-degree, 85-ft (26-m) vertical drop and a weightless inversion known as a heart-line roll as well as a rollover loop or double inversion.

Dolly Parton said: “I’m proud of Dollywood being named one of the top three theme parks in the entire world. That’s why I thought it important to build a world-class roller coaster like Mystery Mine – it’s got a world of surprises in store for folks.”

The rollercoaster was designed by Toronto-based Forrec and manufactured by Gerstlauer Elektro GmbH – Munsterhausen in Germany. Details: www.mysterymine.com
